Cherenkov Telescope Array Australia :
Consortium Workshop

University of Adelaide, 30 Sept. - 1 Oct 2013

Background

Ground-based TeV gamma-ray astronomy has progressed rapidly in the past decade. There are now over 100 galactic and extragalactic sources now known representing a variety of extreme non-thermal astrophysical environments. These results, coming from the current facilities in this field, HESS, VERITAS and MAGIC, clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the stereoscopic imaging Cherenkov technique.

The CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array) represents the next step in ground-based TeV gamma-ray astronomy. It will utilise the successful methods employed by HESS and others via an array of over 50 imaging Cherenkov telescopes in the Southerm Hemisphere (with a smaller scale array in the Northern Hemisphere). CTA is expected to be at least 10 times more sensitive than HESS, and cover a wider energy range from about 20 GeV to well over 100 TeV. Many of the key science topics to be advanced by CTA are summarised in this special edition of the journal Astroparticle Physics.

Workshop Purpose and Agenda

Australia joined CTA in July 2013 via a consortium of six universities. This workshop will take place over 1.5 days, and is open to any astronomers based in Australia who are interested in CTA and its science.
An outline agenda and goals of this workshop are as follows:

  • Monday 30 Sept:
  • Tuesday 1 Oct:
  • The workshop will take place at the University of Adelaide, in the Kerr Grant Lecture Theatre of the Physics Building. See this link for more details.

Video links to the meeting will be available via the SeeVogh Research Network. Please contact Gavin Rowell for connection details.
