BRIEF BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Raymond John Protheroe After completing a Ph.D. on cosmic ray air shower simulation at the University of Durham, England, 1978, Dr Protheroe spent another year at Durham working with Arnold Wolfendale on gamma ray astrophysics. This was followed by three years at N.A.S.A. Goddard Space Flight Center, initially as a U.S. National Academy of Science/National Research Council Research Associate working with Jon Ormes on cosmic ray propagation and Demos Kazanas on models of active galactic nuclei. In 1983 Dr Protheroe moved to Australia as a Queen Elizabeth II Fellow, and subsequently became a member of academic staff at the University of Adelaide where he continues to conduct research on the origin of cosmic rays, active galaxies, and gamma-ray and neutrino astrophysics. Dr Protheroe is the author of over 70 articles on high energy astrophysics in refereed journals, and over 100 papers in conference proceedings. In 1985 he was presented with the inaugural Shakti P. Duggal Award during the International Cosmic Ray Conference in La Jolla, U.S.A. Dr Protheroe has given several invited talks at national and international conferences, most recently at `Neutrino 98' at Takayama, Japan, and at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Astronomical Society of Australia in Adelaide in July 1998.
