Health insurance for travellers?

The Australian Government has signed Reciprocal Health Care Agreements with seven countries:
Finland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
Visitors from the above listed countries can enrol in Medicare and will be entitled to immediately necessary medical and public hospital treatment. (Note: Visitors from Italy and Malta are eligible for these services for a period of six months only.)
Brochures covering the Reciprocal Health Care Agreements are available in Medicare offices. The closest office to the ITP is at:
  • City Centre Arcade, 145 Rundle Mall, Ph 13 2011.
  • Australian residents travelling to the above countries are likewise covered for immediately necessary medical and public hospital treatment under these countries' public health schemes. (Note: Visitors to Italy and Malta are eligible for medical and hospital services for a period of six months only.)

For services not covered by the Agreements, and for services in all other countries, you should consider insuring yourself for any hospital and medical expenses you may incur.
