Computing Facilities in the Department of Physics

The internet and network access

Physics has a permanent, connection to the Internet through the gigabit ethernet backbone provided by ITS. We allocate IPs on the 129.127.102.0/23 subnet and maintain our own NIS, FTP and Web services. Our mail and DHCP services are in the process of being migrated to central services provided by ITS.

ITS maintains an IT Acceptable Use Policy which all users should read and understand before using the network or accessing the internet.

Physics IP numbers are allocated by Jonathan Woithe and Ramona Adorjan. If a new machine is to be plugged into the network you must contact one of these people before plugging it in so an IP number can be allocated. Do not just "guess" an IP number as you might inadvertantly use one which is already allocated. Also note that until your machine's MAC (hardware address) is registered you will not be given an IP via DHCP.

Below is a list of machines and ip's that users may find useful or interesting. Note that as a general rule users should not log on to Adelphi or Hermes.
