Computing Facilities in the Department of Physics

Computer account information

Obtaining an account

All staff and students who would like a unix account will need to fill in the Account Access Form(PDF format) and get it signed by the senior academic or supervisor you will be working with. We cannot process requests unless the form is signed by both the applicant and a member of staff verifying the request - some red tape just cannot be avoided!

Novell accounts are now handled by Information Technology Services (ITS). To arrange for a Novell account please contact the helpdesk (phone 33000, email helpdesk@adelaide.edu.au).

Account details

Your unix account will have a home directory on "adelphi" which normally has a quota of 50MB (student) or 200MB (staff). You will be able to to access all the department's unix workstations and those of your research group with your unix account. Research groups often have their own storage space which you may be able to access; other members of your group should be able to fill you in.

The Digital Alpha workstations and some Linux workstations use "fvwm2" as the default window manager while some of the more recent Linux workstations also offer the choice of "gnome" in addition to fvwm2. "fvwm2" and "gnome" are descibed more fully in Unix window managers.

The novell account you receive will have a home account (mapped to V: drive) on `Oliphant' 200MB of space. Members of the optics group will also have access to the 4GB OPTICS volume. All accounts are part of the wider University NDS tree and have a physics.ua context.
