To enhance and further the ranges from which we are obtaining wind measurements from, the radar is been run in a number of different modes. An example of the horizontal velocity field for each of the modes is available.
- Normal Mode Operation. This involves a 150m pulse giving results from around 500m to up to 3000m, with 150m height resolution. Normal mode velocity field
.
Note: the high velocity measurements at 300m are due to aircraft. With higher rates of successful measurements rejection of spurious results like these will easier.
- Low Mode Operation. To obtain measurements from lower heights we are using a shorter transmitter pulse (~100m) aswell as reducing the gain on the receivers. This helps the receivers recover quicker after transmission and hence obtain the lowest height measurements. The height range of this mode is 300m up to 1500m with 100m resolution. The number of measurements at the 300m level is still quite low, but this is in the process of been improved. Low mode velocity field.
Note: Similar aircraft intereference as for Normal mode at 300m.
- High Mode Operation.
A complete profile of the lower troposphere and overlapping heights of coverage when used in conjunction with ST (stratosphere-troposphere) is another goal of this radar. We have been able to achieve measurements of up to 5km by using a 300m pulse. This overlaps the 2-3km lower limit of the ST radar situated at the same field site. High mode velocity field.
