Present:John O'Connor, Canney, Samardzic, Hale, Carter, Leinweber, Kalloniatis, Veitch, Bouwknegt, Campbell, Cockshell Apologies:French Introductions: The AIP president, John O'Connor, was introduced to committee members. Minutes of the last meeting: Corrections: - Leinweber had submitted an apology for the previous meeting. - National Science week is in August and not July. Business arising from the minutes: - Bouwknegt said he had not received any more suggestions for an AGM speaker and it is urgent to get more. Hale suggested Bruce Mainsbridge as "full of anecdotes". John O'Connor suggested contacting the secretariat for contact information and gave some advice on this to Hale. CHAIR'S REPORT: (Bouwknegt) - National Science Week to start on the following day, with a launch at 1pm in the Museum exhibition hall. - "Science Meets Parliament" will be on 12-13th November and it would be good if we can send someone. (Samardzic said that DSTO will send her. John O'Connor said that there will be a call for nominations to support people to go, and explained the event. He listed advantages in going as learning to lobby, talk to politicians and network.) Bouwknegt said it is important to get young people there, and would talk later about Carter going. TABLED DOCUMENTS: - Hale gave some documents to Kalloniatis concerning AGM venues, noting that she couldn't get the discounts that the RACI did. TREASURER'S REPORT: (Canney) - An expenditure report and bank reconciliation were tabled. - No funding has been received. (Bouwknegt said Cathy Foley was to send a cheque. John O'Connor said that he thought this was sorted and he will check on it on Monday.) - Sponsorship for the 2002 Oliphant Science awards. (This was approved and Canney is to send a cheque. Bouwknegt is to present the AIP prize.) SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS: MEETINGS: Kalloniatis reported that David Malin will speak at the joint meeting with the ASSA, but has requested $200 plus a stay at the Radisson Playford. Steve Cook had rang to get approval for this. Bouwknegt noted that we don't normally give honouraria, but approved it in this case. Leinweber called for the event to be a public lecture. Campbell argued that the ASSA would not want this, because they regard the joint meeting as a benefit for their members. Leinweber insisted and Bouwknegt asked Kalloniatis to write to Steve Cook to ask about the joint meeting being changed to a public lecture. Regarding the joint meeting with the AIB, Kalloniatis reported that he is waiting for information from Andrea Gerson, noting that John Finlay-Jones is away. The venue for the AGM dinner was discussed. Leinweber supported having a new location rather than the same old place. The cost of the dinner for students was discussed. (John O'Connor suggested students have formal dinners sponsored by employers.) Carter suggested the Volga Restaurant as a location. Bouwknegt reminded that the AIP must be separate from other diners. Hale reported a place where 30 guests could book it to themselves. Carter referred to a SPACED dinner and said that she could invite AIP members along. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS: EDUCATION: Samardzic said there would be a meeting on Wednesday about the quiz. So far there are 5 teams entered, with more expected by Friday. The quiz is to be on 30th August. Carter is to contact Reynella and Veitch is to contact Pembroke. Samardzic noted that the Space School had been run, but had not been invited to Flinders this year. ANY OTHER BUSINESS: Campbell reported a delay in setting up the student night. He had been waiting for Blankleider to find a speaker from Flinders before setting the date, but had just found out that Blankleider was waiting to be given a date before selecting a speaker. Bouwknegt instructed Campbell to contact John Thomas and suggest that Sara Hunt be a speaker. DATE OF NEXT MEETING: This was set for Thursday 12th September 2002.
