AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF PHYSICS, SA BRANCH COMMITTEE MINUTES Time: 6pm, Tuesday July 24th 2001 Place: Tea room (#127) of the Dept. of Physics and Mathematical Physics, Adelaide University. PRESENT: Ford, Canney, French, Veitch, Bouwknegt, Kalloniatis, Blankleider, Cockshell, Campbell, Samardzic APOLOGIES: Carter MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING: Correction:In the discussion of the nominations for the accreditation committee, the phrase "Bouwknegt agreed that Blankleider should do this and said that he would approach Tony Thomas and Rod Crewther at Adelaide Uni." should be replaced with: "After some discussion it was agreed that Blankleider should do this. Bouwknegt said that he would approach Tony Thomas and Rod Crewther at Adelaide Uni." Actions: These had been executed, except for: - Bouwknegt had not acted on the Advertiser advert because he had not received the necessary documentation from Campbell. He now has this and so will act on it in the coming week. - Bouwknegt noted that he had not received information from Samardzic about the proposed video camera. - Blankleider had not asked the national branch about the issue of reapplications for the Gold Bragg medal, and undertook to check on this with the National secretary. CHAIR'S REPORT: Bouwknegt reported writing to Property Services about venue fees, but has received no reply. (French noted that we have not been charged for them, eg no charges in the last 12 months for the Kerr Grant. Veitch noted he had discharged his responsibility to inform them of the issue.) He asked about colour transparencies for the Student Night to be shown to students, noting that Campbell could use the "aip-sa" account at Adelaide Uni. to produce them. French suggested that there was a way Campbell could produce them at Flinders. TABLED DOCUMENTS: Campbell tabled copies of the latest postal newsletter, and of the poster and handout advertising the Student Night. TREASURER'S REPORT: French said that he did not have a full report, but that there has been little activity. He reported that he had not received some promised contributions from the Universities, including the one for Veltman from the Faculty of Science. On the latter he undertook to resend the invoice that he had sent a month ago. PROCEDURE FOR NOMINATIONS: Ford asked for the reason why the two nominations from Flinders were unacceptable. Bouwknegt said that the names were not raised before the meeting. He said that they were not unacceptable, but that the other nomination seemed more acceptable to those present. Bouwknegt proposed the following procedure for future nominations: - the secretary should ask for suggestions by email. - Received suggestions should be distributed to the whole committee. - These should be discussed at a committee meeting. - People should only be asked after approval at the committee meeting. Campbell noted that he had created the problem, but on the basis that he had thought that originally the policy was to approach departments. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS: MEETINGS AND PUBLICITY: Kalloniatis reported that things were ready for the Student Night. Campbell cautioned that he does not yet know if either of the two medal recipients will attend. Kalloniatis reported that the joint meeting with the ASSA is definite for Wednesday September 5th. He reported on the difficulties of negotiating the event, and said that he will contact the speaker when he gives a seminar in the department later in the week. Bouwknegt said that Roy Chisholm will give a public lecture on either 9th or 16th October. He is Emeritus Professor at the University of Kent and will talk on the History of Space and Time in a joint event with Mathematics. Campbell suggested that the Antarctic evening would be better held in August or early September, as he thought students will not come to a meeting in the break or in October. Kalloniatis said he will contact Campbell to discuss this. Kalloniatis noted that he is pursuing a joint meeting with the AIB (ie biologists) with John Findlay-Jones from Flinders. It would be in the first half of next year, and could be about the proposed synchrotron. Bouwknegt suggested that it is urgent to arrange the AGM and asked for venues. After some discussion there was consensus to have the AGM at the Public Schools' Club on November 22nd., with a request that committee members contact Kalloniatis with suggestions for a speaker. The Wertheim lunch was discussed. Samardzic confirmed that the event had gone as intended. Noone confirmed Campbell's concern that some people at the back could not hear Margaret speak. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS: EDUCATION: Samardzic said that the Space School was the only item to report. This had gone well, particularly as the students had met Andrew Thomas by chance. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS: MEMBER BENEFITS AND RECRUITMENT: Leinweber said that the subcommittee has not met yet. Campbell reported that the National branch initiative on member benefits is advertised in the most recent "Physicist". SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS: SCIENCE POLICY COMMITTEE: Canney reported that the subcommittee had met on June 16th and decided: - there is now no requirement to send a letter to the National Science Policy committee concerning Science degrees losing value in terms of pure Physics. - Samardzic and Bouwknegt should go to the "Science meets Parliament" event, and that the AIP-SA should provide funding for Bouwknegt. Bouwknegt noted that the National AIP will pay registration for two people, but nothing else. There was agreement that the branch should pay Bouwknegt's airfare and accomodation. Canney asked if Bouwknegt, who represents the branch on the national Science Policy Committee, will do so in the teleconference on Tuesday July 31st. Bouwknegt said he will, but no arrangements have been made yet. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS: WEB PAGE Campbell said he was able to keep updating the page, but asked if anyone had the expertise to fix the problem with the feedback form. Leinweber said that he will have a look at it. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS: AWARDS Blankleider reported that the Silver Bragg medals are ready, but he is waiting for Campbell to provide details of the inscriptions. There was consensus that Bouwknegt, as chair, should present the medals and introduce the speakers to expedite proceedings. Campbell said he had received an application from Hailey Bignall for a student travel award, but it was for a talk that she had given just before the announcement about travel awards was made. There was some concern about making a retrospective award in case other such claims were made. Campbell confirmed that there had been no other claims and that he had told the applicant that the the committee would need to take the circumstances of the retrospectivity into account. The award was approved. SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS: DISPLAY CASE Campbell said that Carter was about to change the display to advertise the Student Night, and that he had provided some photographs of previous award winners and of student speakers for this. ANY OTHER BUSINESS French noted that as he will be overseas from mid-September to mid-October and as he is not standing for Treasurer next year, it would be good to get a replacement for him by mid-September. Bouwknegt suggested that there is a possible new committee member from the UniSA, but questioned whether she should start as Treasurer. DATE OF NEXT MEETING: This was set for Tuesday 4th September 2001 Laurence Campbell, 26-7-01 ACTION SUMMARY: BLANKLEIDER - To check with the National secretary on the issue of renomination for the Gold Bragg medal of candidates who had been eliminated at the University level of selection in the previous year.
