"Out of Africa: a 2 billion year old nuclear reactor"

by Dr Robert Loss

Department of Applied Physics
Curtin University of Technology

Abstract: Enrico Fermi's experimental nuclear reactor, constructed in the 1940's under a sports stadium in Chicago, is widely described as initiating the world's first nuclear chain reaction. But the fossil remains of a natural reactor have been discovered in Africa that operated 2 billion years ago. This lecture describes what was found and how it worked.

The Bronze Bragg medal and merit certificates will be presented at the lecture.

The medal is awarded for the best performance in the 2006 Year-12 Physics exam, with the certificates being for students who received a score of 20/20.
