Abstract:

The present time in Australia is critical for the basic or enabling sciences and physics in particular. FASTS, the organisation representing about 50 Scientific Societies, through its Occasional Papers, National Press Club Symposia, Meet the Parliament Day, annual Policy Statements and the fact that the President sits on PMSIEC is beginning to have an impact on Science Policy in Australia. It is encouraging that before the Government are the Reports of the Chief Scientist and the National Innovation Summit Implementation Committee which are recommending, amongst other things, a doubling of funding for basic sciences in line with the doubling already being implemented for Medical Research funding. There is a growing awareness around the world of the need for a new social contract between scientists, governments, business and industry and university managers. The talk will also discussion of science policy issues with senior staff at SPRU, University of Sussex, with Korean colleagues during his recent visit to Korea as guest of the Korean Physical Society.

Note:

The AIP is pleased to provide wine at dinner including Coriole's Lalla Rookh Grenache Shiraz and Hardy's Insignia Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The cost of the dinner is $30.00 ($20.00 for student members) and this includes a pre-dinner refreshment.
